Guess Who Is Back In School?
I hope this update finds everyone doing well and ready for the 2006-07 school year. As you wander the halls of HCRHS and look at all the changes that have occured over the summer, you might find yourself asking, "Where's Bezsylko?"
As some of you know, I am off to Teachers College, Columbia University for full-time pursuit of an MA in Organization and Leadership. This opportunity was quite sudden and warranted serious consideration. As I looked at the road ahead, I realized that it was time for me to move on and experience new challenges. While most of you were confirming summer plans and looking forward to the end of exams, I was getting ready to leave HCRHS and prepare myself for the next adventure. In short, I was getting ready to "let it go." More than a consequence of my time at HCRHS, this decision is a result of my time there. Many of you have added to my professional experience and I can only hope that you have learned as much from me as I have learned from you. I wish each and every one of you the best of luck in your future adventures. Remember, what's important about this life is how we live it. You are an active participant in your life, your choices and actions will have a direct effect on what happens next. For me, what happens next is full-time study on the graduate level. That means over a thousand pages to read each week, over twelve hours of homework a week, and opportunites that will shape my future. Again, I thank you for the role you have played in my life. I hope that this year and those that are to come find you always doing your best. Be safe. Give and receive honest feedback. Do your best. And when the time comes, let go so you can move on. Almost There
With just a couple of weeks left we are almost finished with the 2005-06 school year. As we approach the end of the year, students and teachers are swamped with end of the year work.
Every student in my Health Class received a Grade Sheet this week. These Grade Sheets detail each of the students academic grades to date. You can also see what is left in the days ahead, including the Health Unit Final. Every student who currently has a grade average below 95% should have their Grade Sheet signed by their parent or guardian and returned to class on June 12. Remember, the report card averages the Physical Education and the Health Unit grades together. However, to earn credit and pass the course, students must pass both the PE and the Health Unit. All late work can be submitted up until the day of the Health Final. Late work will be graded according to the HCRHS late work policy. Fourth Quarter
Welcome to Junior Health!
We are nearing the end of another school year.
The weather is getting warmer, the days are sunnier and longer, and we are all starting to day dream about our summer vacation! As we enter the Health Unit, remember that there are still 25 days of school left and your class responsibilities are intact.
Third Quarter
Welcome to Junior Class Health and the Third Quarter!
This weblog is a tool we will use throughout the quarter to help us better understand the content and requirements of this curriculum.
Many of you are internet savvy and will flourish with this web-log. Others of you are not so experienced and will need some assistance throughout the unit. Regardless of where your technical skills are, your experience with technology this quarter will certainly benefit your understanding of the choices you can make relative to our content and may help prepare you for the roles you take beyond our school walls.
FOURTH QUARTER - Reflection #5
The Final Reflection this quarter focuses on the issue of sex-education in public schools. Access The Education of Shelby Knox website for trailers, interviews and more. Once you familiarize yourself with the Shelby Knox story and her position on abstinence, reflect on the following:
1. How is the situation in your school similar or different from Shelby's school? Do you have things in common with her experience? 2. Did anything in the film surprise you? If so, what and why were you surprised? 3. How does this message compare to the things you've learned about sex - from family, friends, school, the media? What have you learned from the sex education program in your school, and what more would you like to know? 4. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the abstinence-only approach? Which approach do you favor - abstinence-only, abstinence-plus, or comprehensive? Why? 5. Listen carefully to the arguments Ed Ainsworth makes against pre-marital sex. Do you find them compelling? He says that those who have premarital sex will get hurt, “physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and financially.” In each case, what is the potential impact of having sex outside of marriage? The folks from POV and the film may respond to your questions and comments, so feel free to raise some questions during your reflections, but remember, the emphasis of the reflection should be your thoughts and feelings regarding the subject.
