I had Jackie and Isabel review my query letter, and I feel the feedback that was given fit perfectly and they saw things that I didn't. Like in my letter I wrote, "Though I have never been published," I did not see that as a negative statement but when Isabel looked it over she caught it. I also liked how Jackie pulled apart the second paragraph, and told me the last sentence was repetitive. I read over it and understood why it sounded repetitive. I think by doing this exercise you will in the end have a better query letter because of all the feedback. Sotomayor reader

I also liked how in the video one of the editors said that they are doing their job best when the cuts are invisible. I felt that was a very powerful quote, and kind of bad for them because they were not being recognized for a long time. As for our student videos I felt that we did a great job as a class. I liked the sound that Jack's group had in their spot. Even though there was a little bit of wind, it still worked out really well. I also liked the background on my groups shot. It went along with our story, and worked well with our shot. I feel that if our class had a handheld microphone the sound could have been drastically improved and we could have had no wind in our shots at all.

A new theme park has just been opened in Murtle Beach, South Carolina called Hard Rock Park. The park is a normal theme park based around music. You can go on a coaster, and rock out to songs by Led Zeppelin, and The Eagles. Featured above in the image is the Zeppelin coaster. There is even a replica of the statue of liberty who is holding a zippo lighter instead of the infamous torch, and she is also wearing sunglasses which quote Neil Young saying, "Keep on Rockin' in a Free World." I think that this theme park will be a huge success becasue there are so many people out there who love rollar coasters, and love rock music. What better combination then the two of them? The Hard Rock company is hoping that this will draw 30,000 people a day, and I feel that they will have no problem doing so. I plan to make my way down there sometime. # Posted by borashen@hcrhs.k12.nj.us on 6/17/08; 8:44:08 AM - Discuss
Brian May is the longtime lead guitarist for the band Queen who first hit it big in the seventies. May's music has brough joy to many people throughout the world, and is still producing music today but his latest project is different none the less. May is a co-author on the book BANG! The Complete History of the Universe. The book has nothing to do with music, and that is what makes May so special. He dedicates his life to different causes, and shows people that he cares. I'm anticipating this release becasue its such a different thing for May to release. Who would think that the lead guitarist of Queen would someday be putting his knowledge of the big bang into a book? I sure wouldn't think so. Overall I can't wait for the book the book to be released and I will definatly be purchasing a copy. # Posted by borashen@hcrhs.k12.nj.us on 6/17/08; 8:36:24 AM - Discuss MOST USED SOURCES
The first source that I found was most helpful would have to be www.nytimes.com/. They always provided me with new current events, images, and sometimes an article that related to my beat topic. The NY Times website was my most visited site because it had more to offer then any other source that I had found. The Second source that I found helpful would be www.heart-music.com/. Heart’s website provided me with updates, and provided me with the tour information for the Heart, Cheap Trick, and Journey tour. The website has many images, and press releases for upcoming events, and new releases. The heart site was another helpful site. The third site that I found most helpful was www.realrocknews.com/. Everyday I visited this site, and even if I didn’t find something I liked, they still always had new information and links to other websites you could visit. I felt that by providing their viewers with the links, they are letting them have a little more information. Real Rock News also helped with my blog posts. The fourth website that I found was most effective was www.yahoo.com/. I defiantly didn’t find much for my beat topic there, but when I did, it was great information. I especially liked reading the “odd news” section on yahoo. Yahoo also holds many different images which you could post on your blog if needed. Another website that I used to access information was www.rocknrollzone.com/. They didn’t update their information as much as I was hoping they would because everything they had posted was phenomenal. This site also provided links to other sites where you could get more information. Overall there are many sites in which you can access your information. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p> </o:p> THE PEOPLE
I feel that there are five main people that you must contact in order to see, and feel the experience of a rock star. One person that you would contact is the rock star/ celebrity themselves. They know themselves better then anyone else does, and could give you the inside scoop on their life. If you go directly to the source, there is a better chance of the story not being fabricated by others. If you can not go directly to the source, you may want to go to their personal assistant. Their assistant is the person that they tell everything to. Everything that they want, and everything that they need is passed onto the assistant and it is their job to get it done. A rock star’s assistant could supply you with information on what rock stars buy, eat, and wear. If you can not even come in contact with their assistant, then I would say you should talk with a bunch of different fans. The fans are what keep the band alive, and rocking. They buy the albums, purchase tickets to see them play, and buy their merchandise. A fan probably knows the rock stars entire life story plus some. Most likely, they will know things before most of the general public knows. If worse comes to worse, you could always contact a radio personnel. Sometimes they land interviews with bands, and management so they could provide you with some information. When bands are promotion new albums and their tour they will make constant stops at radio stations to promote whatever they are doing so getting in contact with the station is a smart thing to do. Another person that you could contact would be one of the daytime or nighttime talk show hosts. Their job revolves around interviewing these big rock stars, and I’m sure they have seen the way that the act. David Letterman has been around for quite sometime now and I’m sure that he has a bunch of information he would be willing to share. <o:p> </o:p> THE STORIES <o:p> </o:p> The most important story that I found would have to be about Madonna’s latest release “Hard Candy,” and her tour to promote it. Even though she may be pretty old now, her album is fresh and new thanks to her guest star appearances by Justin Timberlake and Kanye West. The next most exciting source of information would have to be that ACDC is set to release a new studio album, and tour to support it. Their last release was in 2000, and is titled “Stiff Upper Lip.” I think that the time has come, and we are due a new studio album from the legends. The next article I found was very interesting. Ozzy Osbourne will be hosting Ozzfest next year, but it will not be a touring event. It will be held in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place><st1:City>Dallas</st1:City>, <st1:State>Texas</st1:State></st1:place> and will be a one show event. Hopefully all Ozzy fans will be able to make his one show, unless he plans on touring in smaller venues, which I highly doubt. Another fascinating source of information is that the infamous “Stairway to Heaven” solo was never preplanned or structured. Jimmy Page, lead guitarist for the band Led Zeppelin, just showed up that day and took 3 cuts on the solo. He picked which one he liked the most, and that was the one that you hear on your albums. Tina Turner is stirring up some news as well. Tina is set to embark on a final tour at the age of 68. Her fans have been begging to get this chance one more time, and they finally have it. For being an older woman, she still has the best legs in the business! <o:p> </o:p> WHAT I LEARNED <o:p> </o:p> When starting this beat project, I was not planning on getting any kind of impact from it. I thought that it would just be me finding information, and throwing it up on the website, but it turns out that it really is a lot of work. I never once finish a full week of posts because there really isn’t that much information available on a certain topic, and I guess that’s why beat reporters often wind up repeating themselves because of the lack of information. The only topics that wouldn’t seem to be to challenging are on-season sports and crimes because they are constantly occurring. So being a beat reporter is a lot more challenging then I thought it would have been. The one thing that did throw me off though was the current events. When we were first told about the blogs, we were told that we would focus on one specific topic strictly, but then we get throw current events on top of that, and it was just way too much to handle. I think that by discussing current events in class, and taking the news quizzes that we should have to report on current events, and should be strictly our beats. But I feel that overall this experience has been good because now we know what a journalist has to go through from their interviews, all the way to writing their stories. It can be challenging at times, but when you see your name printed in the newspaper, it is worth all the hard work that you poured into that story. <o:p> </o:p> <o:p> </o:p> # Posted by borashen@hcrhs.k12.nj.us on 6/16/08; 11:44:21 PM - Discuss About a year ago, Wall Street's profits were at an all time high, as well as their salaries, and superlatives. The album was a hit in both the US and Canada and songs such as "Crazy on You," and "Magic Man" soared up the charts. Recently, Heart's first effort was the first in a new show produced by Shout Factory called, "Legendary Albums LIVE!" The show takes the most influential albums ever released, and has them played in whole, along with some bonus songs. Heart was also honored on VH1s show "Rock Honors." They were the first female group to be honored on the show. It's no secrect that they are one of my favorite bands, and I have tickets to see the Journey, Heart, and Cheap Trick tour in August. I have heart's first book preordered as well. It is called, "Heart: In the Studio." The one memory that I will always hold close to me is when I have the chance to meet Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. It was amazing, and since then my obsession has just grown. I will post a picture later. Check back for new updates.

In the latest article I've read, Verizon has decided to buy out their competitors Alltell wireless for 28.1 BILLION DOLLARS! I guess if it is not possible to beat your competition, you could just buy them out. The article states that Alltell and Verizon have been "dancing" around merging for years, but have just made it happen. Experts say that Alltell has a chance to continue to grow, but since the merge we will not be able to see the company rise to success. I honestly feel if a company has that much money to spare, why are they not doing more to help out the people? Why don't they make a donation to cancer research or something? If more people who had money just gave a little more, who knows what success would come from their great help. Hopefully this merge helps out both companies. I myself have verizon as my wireless provider, and can't find a problem with the merge. # Posted by borashen@hcrhs.k12.nj.us on 6/8/08; 11:25:57 PM - Discuss Flemington, NJ- The Remains of Michael Tulley have just been identified through DNA analysis testing. Over a nine day span three suitcases washed upon shore in RehobothDelaware, near the Delaware Memorial Bridge, which inside contained the remains of Michael Tulley. Mr. Tulley was a father of two wonderful children, and was married to his wife, Colleen Tulley. Just yesterday Johnnie Stiles, of the Hunterdon County Prosecutors office held a press conference releasing this information, “Mike Tulley’s wife Colleen has been charged with dismemberment of a corpse, and murder, and she is being held in the Hunterdon County Penitentiary.” Colleen’s best friend Ann Stone said, “I can not believe the court believes Colleen is capable of something like this. Anyone who knows her would agree that she is not capable of committing a crime of this measure.” Mr. Stiles said that Colleen and her co-worker, Mr. de Fink began having an affair with each other when Colleen was pregnant with her first child, but it came to an end soon after. Mr. de Fink and Mrs. Tulley both work at the Greater Middlesex Fertility Clinic. Their relationship picked back up after Colleen got pregnant with her second child. “The relationship was fun,” said Mr. de Fink, “But I never felt that Colleen was anything more then a fun time.” Mr. Stiles also said “Colleen and Mr. de Fink both talked about divorcing their respective spouses to start a new life with each other.” But when Mr. de Fink was asked about the conversation, he denied that it ever occurred. Mary Crisp, Mike Tulley’s grandmother, was the person to report Michael’s disappearance. “Mickey was the kind of kid that would help anyone. It really gets me mad how someone could take away an angel’s life.” A week before Mike Tulley’s disappearance, Colleen bought a firearm from a pawn shop in Pennsylvania. Also on the family’s home computer, a search was conducted by an unidentifiable person searching for, “NJ gun laws, and Undetectable poisons.” Mr. Stiles said that Mr. de Fink told police, “Colleen Tulley’s house smelled like a morgue.” But later on, Mr. de Fink revoked his statement. Mr. de Fink said, “I was scared, and didn’t want to get into any trouble. I have a life outside Colleen to protect.” Funeral Services for Mr. Tulley will be held on Monday on cemetery hill in Flemington. Flowers may be sent to the Bongiovi Funeral Home in Raritan. For more information call the Bongiovi Funeral Home at 908-555-5555. -Brett Orashen
# Posted by borashen@hcrhs.k12.nj.us on 6/6/08; 7:54:12 AM - Discuss (1 response) In last nights final Democratic primarys, Barack Obama has taken the lead and will most likely be the Democratic canidate. Even though Obama has more super delegates, there is still a slight chance for Hillary Clinton to pick up the nomination. Obama leads the delegates 2,154 to (Clinton) 1,919. I feel no matter who gets elected, the system that we are using with the two party voting just doesn't work the way it should. I think that if you want a chance to be elected president, then you should be up against everyone and may the best man win. But if Obama does get the Democratic nomination, I feel that Hillary Clinton will attempt to become Barack's vice president.

In a recent interview with guitarist Jimmy Page, from band Led Zeppelin, Jimmy was asked how he composed the ever-so-famous Stairway to Heaven solo, but Jimmy claims it was an on the spot deal. Stuck in a Vancouver Studio since their last release "Stiff Upper Lip" in 2000 ACDC, producer Brendan O'Brien, and longtime audio engineer Mike Fraser are set to release a new album later this year. Since their latest release was almost a decade ago, fans are anxiously awaiting some new material from the rock gods. Check out ACDC's website for new updates on the album, and hopefully a sneak peak! The wait for this new album will definaly seem like forever but I'm willing to wait as long as we get something new. Can't wait to see if they stick to their rocking roots, or take on a whole different style becasue time can definaly change a band. # Posted by borashen@hcrhs.k12.nj.us on 5/20/08; 8:47:19 AM - Discuss
Madonna with her latest release "Hard Candy," will embark on a 27-show tour starting on August 23rd, 2008 in Wales. Tickets for the first couple shows will be on sale May 19th, today, so don't miss your chance to see the AMAZING Madonna. I have listened to Madonna's latest LP in its entirety, and feel that it is a great piece of art. Madonna collaborates with other artists such as Justin Timberlake to produce an exciting, and fast paced album. I would recommend her album to old and young audiences alike. # Posted by borashen@hcrhs.k12.nj.us on 5/20/08; 8:30:59 AM - Discuss
