NIGHTLIFE IN ...MADRID!

flamenco gitano singing in a local barThe capital of Spain, located in the heart of the peninsula and right in the center of the Castillian plain, has a population of over three million. A cosmopolitan city, a business center, headquarters for the Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and the home of the Spanish Royal Family, Madrid also plays a major role in both the banking and industrial sectors. Most of its industry is located in the Southern fringe of the city, where important textile, food and metal working factories are clustered.

Madrid is characterized by intense cultural and artistic activity and a very lively nightlife. The grand metropolis of Madrid can trace its origins to the times of Arab Emir Mohamed I (852-886), who ordered the construction of a fortress on the left bank of the Manzanares river. Later it became the subject of a dispute between the Christians and Arabs until it was conquered by Alonso VI in the 11th century. At the end of the 17th century, a defensive wall was built for the protection of the new outlying areas, tracing the roads of Segovia, Toledo and Valencia. During the 18th century, under the reign of Carlos III, were designed the great arteries of the city, such as the Paseo del Prado and Paseo las Acacias. Content borrowed from www.aboutmadrid.com.

LA MESQUITA OF CORDOBA

The Mezquita dates back to the 10th century when Córdoba reached its zenith under a new emir, Abd ar-Rahman 111 who was one of the great rulers of Islamic history. At this time Córdoba was the largest, most prosperous cities of Europe, outshining Byzantium and Baghdad in science, culture and the arts. The development of the Great Mosque paralleled these new heights of splendour. Today the Mezquita as it is known can be visited throughout the year for 6 Euro entrance fee. The approach is via the Patio de los Naranjos, a classic Islamic ablutions courtyard which preserves both its orange trees and fountains. When the mosque was used for Moslem prayer, all nineteen naves were open to this courtyard allowing the rows of interior columns to appear like an extension of the tree with brilliant shafts of sunlight filtering through. EL CORAZON DE CATALUNYA ES... ¡BARCELONA!

Barcelona is one of the largest and most vibrant cities in Spain. Located on the country's Northeastern coastline of the Mediterranean Ocean, it boasts a population greater than 3 million as diverse as the country itself. The people of Barcelona speak at least two languages - Castillian, the official language of Spain, and Catalan, the official language of Catalunya. Barcelona hosted the 1992 Olymic Games and is central to the economic and political fiber of Spain.
