Working Papers FAQ - An Update

They say that getting your first job is a major step - however, the process of filling out the required form FOR that job can be a major challenge! Here are some answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ). The information is available in the NJ Department of Labor's NJ State Child Labor Laws & Regulations booklet or on their website.
  • During the school year, completed sets of working papers are processed daily during Unit Lunch (10:26 - 11:11) in the IMC (summer hours are Mondays through Thursdays, 8:30 - 11:30). Approved working papers will be returned in 2 – 3 days.
  • The minimum age for a child to get working papers is 14 years old.
  • Children under 14 years of age may obtain working papers only if they will be working on a farm or delivering newspapers.
  • The minimum wage is $7.25/hour as of July 24, 2009.
  • Student volunteers (no pay involved) do not need working papers.

    If a student…

  • Lives in NJ, but works in a different state, working papers must be obtained from that state.
  • Worked at a summer camp or pool the previous summer, there is no need to re-apply for the same position. Students who are re-hired for seasonal work do not need to re-file working papers.
  • Lives in NJ and will be working at the NJ shore, he/she will get working papers issued from the NJ school district where he/she will be working (Child Labor Law 34:2-21.13).
  • Lives in another state but wishes to work in NJ, she/he must obtain working papers from the local NJ school district (where the employer is located).
  • Lives in another state and the employer is in NJ and the work is done by email, the student gets working papers from NJ (school district where employer is located) and also from home state (covered by both states).
  • Is not taking classes at HCRHS, but is enrolled in a correspondence class, the principal from the last school attended must sign the form. Pick up working papers in the house offices, College and Testing Center, the IMC or from the receptionists. A detailed set of instructions, including a sample form, is provided with each new set of working papers. The process used for completing the working papers differs slightly for students who are not enrolled at HCRHS as opposed to those who are. Please follow the instructions carefully! Confused? Contact Mrs Sullivan in the IMC (or at 284-7225).

    Drink Your Water Responsibly!

Your voices have been heard, and starting with the new year you may drink water in the IMC!!  The IMC staff asks that, when not drinking, bottles and mugs be kept closed and off the table tops.  Please note that drinks are limited to plain water which, if spilled, will not leave a sticky or colorful mess.   As with all new initiatives, this new policy will be reviewed to determine its success.  Please do your part and help keep the IMC free from spills!!

    Thank you!

    Works Cited/Bibiography Formatting

A new edition of the MLA Handbook has been published and there have been many changes to the formatting that we have used in the past.  The IMC Staff has created a new Works Cited handout for your use, but also suggest that you consider using a “citation maker” such as EasyBib (http://easybib.com/) to help you in formatting your list of resources.  After discussions with many teachers, we have decided that it is more important for you to know HOW to identify the required citation components including WHAT the ORIGINAL source (magazine, newspaper, book, government document, etc) is within an online database (Facts on File, SIRS, EBSCO, etc) than how to place the needed information in the required format.

Identifying the original source within a database is not always easy.  Here are guidelines for some of the resources you will be using:

    Books

    ·         Books generally include an author, title, publisher, place of publication, and year of publication.

    Magazines

    ·         Magazines generally have a volume and/or issue number and the publication month and year.  If the magazine is published more than once a month, it will also have a date.

    Newspapers

    ·         More often than not, the newspaper title will include the town or city name within the title.  Page numbers may include a section along with the page number (A4).  In addition to page numbers, the number of words may be included.

    Government Publications

    ·         Government documents will have the name of a federal agency (example: Department of…) as the publisher or will indicate that they have been published by the Government Printing Office (GPO).

If you are unsure, ask for assistance.  Also look for the citation that most databases include either at the end of an article or as a link from somewhere on the page.  As always, DO NOT ASSUME that the formatting provided by the online service is accurate.  Use it as a guide, taking the individual components (author, title of article, title of database, publisher, etc.) and inputting them into the online citation maker.
